Why is it so hard to make a good comedy set on a tropical island? This is a question that has vexed the sleep of the greatest film theorists and scholars. Beauty is the killer here, especially in the Hawaii films.
And last year's similarly salty comedy "Knocked Up" did nearly the same thing for Seth Rogen. He wrote and stars in this appealing romantic comedy, which features some very big laughs and is considerably sweeter than the trailers would make it seem. But as with all the movies produced by Judd Apatow and his crew, it's also extremely R-rated, especially in terms of sexual material.
Forgetting Sarah Marshall is one of those movies that everyone has at least seen parts of thanks to its constant TV airings. With such frequent playtime, you'd think that there are fans out there who know the comedy like the back of their hand, but an eagle-eyed viewer has discovered a mind-boggling cameo that makes me want to watch the film all over again. The movie launched in theaters only a month before the first Sex and the City film debuted inand Miranda's cameo in Forgetting Sarah Marshall is a surprise, subtle hint related to that coincidence.
Forgetting Sarah Marshall opens with one of the more shocking and brave scenes to come along in a while. Composer Peter Bretter Jason Segal sits in house, trying to avoid work. He gets a call from his girlfriend of five years, television star Sarah Marshall Kristen Bellwho announces that she's coming right over.
When I was 15, my parents took my friends and me to see Forgetting Sarah Marshall. To this day, I'm not sure why I thought the latest Judd Apatow-produced comedy was the best Saturday night outing for a church youth group in Savannah, Ga. My conservative parents surely wondered the same thing when, in the first five minutes, a naked, flaccid, dripping wet Peter Bretter Segel gets broken up with by his hotshot actress girlfriend Sarah Marshall Kristen Bell and proceeds to have lots of cringe-worthy rebound sex with strangers.

You could call it Cinderella grifting: the act of making yourself appear lovable enough, worthy enough of care and attention, to get the world to offer you a little kindness. It makes you greedy. It makes you bad. All you can do is be lovable enough for the creatures around you, the birds and mice and Disney tourists, to take pity, understand your lovability, and reach out to help.

Forgetting Sarah Marshall, the latest project from the Judd Apatow factory, features the same unique blend of raunchy humor and genuine emotion that has characterized his other movies, but unlike The Year-Old Virgin and Knocked Upit lacks the moralizing and social commentary found in those other films. Perhaps that's because while Apatow wrote and directed both Virgin and Knocked Uphe was merely a producer—and thus far less hands-on—for Sarah Marshall. Written by and starring Jason Segel, and directed by newcomer Nicholas Stoller, Sarah Marshall does attempt to make some kind of comment about the damage caused by infidelity. But none of the "infidelity" involves married couples; most of the sex in the film is extra-marital.
