Maedeh Hojabri, an year-old gymnast, was arrested for posting clips of herself performing dance routines to her thousands of Instagram followers. State TV broadcast a video on Friday in which Ms Hojabri acknowledged breaking moral norms, although it is unclear whether the statement was made under duress. In response, women across Iran have taken to social media to post videos of themselves dancing, in protest against her detention.
The announcement did not indicate how many women have been banned or identify them by name. Nor did it explain where and when they competed in China or why they were being penalized. Iranian authorities have penalized female athletes in the past for participating in international competitions without the hijab, the head-to-toe Shia-Islamic dress code that all women are legally required to observe in public.
